Three traditional poles at Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus have been revitalised by the original artist 23 years after they were first built.
Melville Island artist Eymard Tungatalum [toong-ga-taalum] crafted the Pukumani poles in 1993 while studying at Northern Territory University.
The poles tell a Tiwi story of creation about the rituals to help the dead enter the spirit world, with each pole symbolising a character in the story.
Pro Vice Chancellor Indigenous Leadership Professor Steve Larkin says the resurrection of the poles is important to the University and its relationship with the Tiwi people.
