The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia says last weeks riot at Banksia Hill Detention Centre isn’t an isolated incident, the service has been receiving a lot of complaints about the treatment of detainees for more than a year.

Dozens of detainees took part in the 14-hour stand-off last week, breaching their cells and climbing onto the roof before lighting fires and hurling projectiles as the facility was plunged into lockdown.

Premier Mark McGowan described the incident as a form of terrorism and says mental conditions like FASD aren’t an excuse.

CEO of the legal service, Wayne Nannup says the premier’s comments are ill-informed.
