In Queensland a jobs agency has received a warning from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet for ‘failing to deliver jobs’ to Aboriginal people in Cape York.
Cape York Employment was warned in October last year that its performance was “unsatisfactory” and “needed to improve.”
Cape York Employment is the Commonwealth’s “Work for the Dole” provider for remote communities in Far North Queensland.
The employment agency has been granted approximately $24 million in a five year government grant which is set to expire in June next year.
Noel Pearson – one of the co-directors of the organisation – says the problems were “administrative compliance issues” that have been fixed.
Professor Jon Altman of the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy says the organisation should be “deeply concerned”.
