Only 2500 out of 40,000 NSW Indigenous Land Claims have been determined since the introduction of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act in 1983.

It has been calculated that the current number of undetermined land claims, which has risen to 29,000 in the last year, will take 90 years or more to determine.

The Registrar of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, Stephen Wright, says it is the process, not the Act that is broken.

NSW Land Council Chairman Roy Ah See says the negotiation process must be improved and there is a long way to go before negotiations can take place on a level playing field.

A spokesperson for Minister for Lands Niall Blair says the government is committed to addressing the backlog of claims.
