Palawa lawyer Michael Mansell has voiced opposition to any proposal of Australia becoming a republic, citing the late First Nations senator Neville Bonner’s speech where he said Australia’s business with Indigenous people needs to be addressed first.

The comments are also in line with those of Wiri Senior Council Tony McAvoy who warned that a campaign towards an Australian republic would consume talks around treaties or constitutional recognition.

Mr Mansell says Mr Bonner’s speech at the 1998 constitutional convention got it right.
