Wiri man Tony McAvoy SC (pictured) says if a referendum for an Australian republic becomes a reality, the campaign will drown out calls for treaties and constitutional change.
The comments come in the wake of the Brexit vote which led to Britain leaving the European Union this week.
The move prompted calls in Scotland and Northern Ireland to become independent of Britain and the same call has been suggested by some regarding Australia’s membership in the Commonwealth.
Mr McAvoy says an apparent increase in membership of the republican movement since the Brexit decision, may mean the push for an independent Australia could come sooner than we think.
