The president of a rural doctors peak body says recommendations made three years ago to improve workplace safety for remote health workers went ignored.

The comments come as rural health stakeholders prepare to meet with Federal Minister for Rural Health Fiona Nash to discuss safety issues and preventative strategies against violence.

President of the Rural Doctor’s Association of Australia Ewen McPhee says a major project undertaken in 2013 called for recognition of the importance of the safety and well being of rural health professionals.

The work culminated in the development of a website, www.workingsafe.com.au, to provide information on working safe practices as well as a guide to assist rural and remote professionals and their communities to develop their own strategies.
