A co-chair of the Referendum Council says Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott will be important in strengthening conservative support of a referendum on the constitutional recognition of First Nations people
The suggested date of May 2017 for a referendum, which is intended to mark the anniversary of the successful 1967 referendum, may be in jeopardy by a plebiscite on same sex marriage, slated for the same time.
Mark Leibler, from the council tasked by the government to guide support for a referendum, says they are interested in engaging Mr Abbott when a model for the move is up and running.
