Internet and mobile services have been restored for remote communities in the Northern Peninsular and Torres Strait regions of Queensland after a four-day blackout.

Communities in Queensland’s far north have been plagued by ongoing mobile coverage issues, leaving people without the ability to call emergency services and businesses and individuals without access to online banking systems.

Saibai Koedal woman Talei Elu is a project lead for First Nations non-profit organisation Common Ground in the region.

She says the frequent outages are leaving locals without a voice.

She said communities have been calling out for local solutions.
