A delegation of 18 people from the six sites chosen as a potential nuclear waste dump has travelled to Canberra to protest the project.

Delegates from the communities say they are unhappy with the consultation process, with some saying the government has refused to hold public meetings in their area.

Natalie Wasley from the Beyond Nuclear Initiative told CAAMA radio there needs to an independent inquiry into nuclear waste management.

A decision on the preferred site is expected by the end of 2016.
