A prominent historian says people should be using the word ‘invasion’ when referring to Britain’s arrival to this continent, so people get used to hearing and using the word.
The comment comes as the debate of the Nation’s history spikes once again as the University of New South Wales is accused through media channels of “rewriting history”.
The university’s Diversity Toolkit, which is an iteration of a guide developed in 1996, states that this land was not settled peacefully, and that it was invaded, occupied and colonised.
Professor Peter Read, who coined the phrase ‘The Stolen Generations’, says the only reason the term ‘invasion’ has become loaded, if due to what he calls denialists of history.
