AAP – A legal bid to get teenage criminals who trashed Victorian youth jails out of an adult prison will be heard in the Supreme Court on Monday.
Up to 20 teenagers are being held in Barwon prison – separate from the adult population – after they trashed the Malmsbury and Parkville youth detention facilities.
The Human Rights Law Centre and Fitzroy Legal Service are bringing the legal action in a bid to get those teenagers out of Barwon.
The lawyers say the children have no access to proper schooling or treatment programs and are handcuffed to and from the basketball court and the visitor’s centre when they are allowed outside.
The government has consistently said it will strongly defend any action against it in the court, after youth offenders’ rioting caused significant damage to the junior prisons.
The case will be heard in the Victorian Supreme Court this morning.
