A series of community gatherings have taken place this week around the nation as part of the Family Matters Campaigns’ week of community action.
The movement was sparked due to the high over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in child protection and custody
Indigenous children are 10 times more likely to be removed by child protection authorities than non-Indigenous kids, with 17,000 first nations kids currently living away from home.
Racheal Atkinson, board member of SNAICC- The national Voice of our Children – spoke to NIRS NEWS about the week of community action taking place.
This year will be the 20th Anniversary of the Bringing them Home report.
Despite this Ms Atkinson says we are in real danger of a second stolen generation.
The events consist of conferences and gathering and this week will be held in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and other communities around the nation to raise awareness to get all levels of government on board to create a national strategy.
