A second Melbourne council will vote on Monday whether or not to scrap Australia day celebrations out of respect for First Nations people.
Last week the Yarra City Council voted to stop referring to January 26 as ‘Australia Day’ and cease holding citizenship ceremonies on that day.
The move brought condemnation from the Government who responded by withdrawing Yarra City’s right to hold citizenship ceremonies on any day.
Darebin Council will today vote whether to follow Yarra’s lead.
A survey of 81 people in the area found 86 per cent supported the Council’s stance on the #changethedate campaign.
The Greens have thrown their support behind the Yarra council after the Federal Government’s rebuke, with Greens MP Adam Bandt offering to officiate citizenship ceremonies himself.
Greens Senator Rachel Siewert has offered to do the same for local governments in her state of Western Australia if any of them follow Yarra City Council’s lead.
