Labor’s minister for Indigenous affairs is calling on minister Nigel Scullion to commit to the future of the Indigenous rangers program.

The call comes as Minister Scullion rejects reports that the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet is considering a major overhaul of the program.

Last Friday media outlet Crikey reported that according to a leaked PowerPoint presentation, a review into the highly successful program and a major operational restructure was being considered.

Among the ideas reportedly proposed were a limit to participation with a ranger group to a maximum of five years and only allowing ranger groups to recruit those registered as community development program job seekers.

Shadow minister for Indigenous affairs Shayne Neumann said the federal government needs to provide some clarity on the future of the program.
