First Nations artists and art centres are calling on the Government to make it illegal to trade Indigenous art unless qualified to do so.

The call comes ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Much concern lies with an abundance of inauthentic Indigenous art in the tourism industry.

Gabrielle Sullivan is the Chief Executive of Indigenous Art Code and has been researching the issue.

She says the majority of souvenirs are not produced but First Nations people.

Valerie Keenan is the Arts Manager at Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre in Far North Queensland and says it undermines traditional culture.
