A report on youth sexual violence and abuse in far north Queensland has been released three years after it was first delivered in 2013.
The report was written by Professor Stephen Smallbone, who identified high rates of sexual offences in the suburbs of West Cairns and Aurukun.
Over a 12-year period to 2012, Aurukun had an average annual rate of sexual offences 6.6 times higher than the rest of Queensland.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Curtis Pitt has appointed a steering committee to make recommendations for change.
“It’s clear that not enough has been done to address the actions that should come out of the report,” said Mr Pitt.
“The report into youth sexual violence in Aurukun and west Cairns is shocking and of course is quite distressing.”
But Waanyi man and Aboriginal affairs and youth advocate Jack Wilkie-Jans says he is concerned the report will lead to a Northern Territory style Intervention policy in QLD.
