The Victorian Government has begun transferring social housing assets worth $500mn to Aboriginal Housing Victoria.
The transfer – believed to be the largest to an Indigenous organisation anywhere – is made up of more than 1500 titles located in Melbourne and around regional Victoria.
Operating as a non-profit organisation, Aboriginal Housing Victoria has previously acted as a rent collector but did not have powers to buy and sell properties leased from the government.
Director of Strategy and Performance at Aboriginal Housing Victoria, Darren Smith, says the transfer is the culmination of 30 years of work by the organisation.
Mr Smith says that they have “taken into account” the fact that in general the housing is “aging” and they have made plans on renewing the portfolio.
