The Prime Minister has announced he will bring the issue of youth detention and child protection outside the Northern Territory to the next Council of Australia Government’s meeting.

Since the announcement of a royal commission into the abuse of children in detention in the Territory, Indigenous groups and advocates have been pushing for an expansion of the terms of reference to include all states and territories.

Queensland advocates and former detention workers have raised the alarm over the last week over alleged physical and verbal abuse of children in Queensland’s two youth detention centres.

The QLD government has said there is no systemic abuse and is confident it has processes in place that would prevent it.
