An Indigenous academic says a national Indigenous voice needs to come after there is proper representation at a local and regional level.

The campaign for an Indigenous voice is well underway as the Federal Government seek to hold a referendum within its first term.

The voice is a call made within the Uluru Statement along with the call for a treaty and truth telling process.

Professor Marcia Langton took part in a consultation process for the former government alongside Professor Tom Calma.

Professor Langton says the voice needs to be built from the ground up.
