In the Northern Territory the town of Tennant Creek has seen its only major grocery store close after it suffered major fire damage overnight.
Northern Territory Police said a large fire at the rear of the IGA building spread into the building and resulted in “about a third” of the roof collapsing, and serious damage caused to stock inside.
The fire burned for several hours before it was contained.
Tennant Creek IGA said on social media it would be closed until further notice but would be doing everything possible to get the store operating again.
NT Fire and Rescue Acting District Officer David Letheby said it was understood there were contingency plans underway to keep groceries available to town residents.
The nearest major supermarket is in Alice Springs, 500 kilometres to the south.
