Warlpiri woman Jacinta Price has won a Northern Territory Senate preselection battle, besting first-term Country Liberal Samantha McMahon.

If elected the Alice Springs Council deputy mayor would be the third Indigenous Australian to represent the Coalition in the Upper House.

In a statement Price said she appreciated the community support she was receiving and has received endorsements from former PM John Howard and former federal Labor president Warren Mundine.

Price is known for drawing attention to the high rates of domestic violence in Indigenous communities and for her vocal opposition to such movements as Change the Date and Black Lives Matter, which she has previously described as “social media fads.”

Territory Labor has confirmed current Senator Malarndirri McCarthy will run as the party’s candidate for the Senate and Northern Land Council chief executive Marion Scrymgour is the Labor candidate for Lingiari.
