The NSW police watchdog has recommended a police officer be considered for prosecution and dismissal from the force after they allegedly punched an Aboriginal teenager twice in the head in a hospital emergency department.

Hospital staff contacted the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) saying they witnessed an officer repeatedly punch the young person and drag them across the floor after they attempted to flee while in custody.

The LECC found the officer continued to punch the teenager after he’d stopped resisting and then dragged him along the floor by the handcuffs.

It’s delivered a series of recommendations including that the Director of Public Prosecutions consider laying charges of assault and that the police commissioner consider dismissing the officer.
