An inquest into the 2017 death in custody of an Aboriginal man at Tamworth Correctional Centre began yesterday at the NSW Coroner’s Court.

22-year old Tane Chatfield was found unresponsive in his cell in September 2017 and died in hospital two days later.

Corrective Services NSW said the death was a suicide but Mr Chatfield’s family have maintained they are skeptical of information given to them by authorities.

The family says they photographed numerous injuries found on Mr Chatfield’s body which were inconsistent with a suicide attempt.

Mr Chatfield’s mother, Nioka Chatfield, addressed supporters in Sydney over the weekend.

The inquest will run until Friday.
