A First Nations Senator says former NT minister Jack Ah Kit was larger than life and acted as an inspiration in her start to politics.
The comment follows the passing of Mr Ah Kit who was the first Aboriginal cabinet minister in the Territory for the seat of Arnhem which he held up to 2005 when he retired from politics.
Before this he had been the head of the Northern Land Council and the director of the Jawoyn Association.
He was also respected in the Territory’s sporting scene, having played for multiple clubs, most notably, for the Darwin Buffaloes where he also served as president for a few years up to 2001.
Labor Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, who’s career in politics began by taking over the reins of Mr Ah Kit’s seat of Arnhem in 2005, says he made an impression on all Australians, not just our mob.
