A proposed cable car for Hobart’s kunanyi or Mt Wellington has been recommended for refusal by planning consultants.
The $54 million development proposal brought forward more than two years ago includes a “fine-dining restaurant, all-day café, craft bar and an “ampitheatre’ at the top of the mountain which presides over the Tasmanian capital.
The cable car has faced the opposition of locals, including the Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage officers, who last month lodged a joint submissions with the Hobart City Council against the proposal, which they said would “significantly affect the Aboriginal cultural values of kunanyi forever.”
Planning consultants have given 21 reasons as to why Hobart City councillors should refuse the development application, including that it would diminish the park’s tourism, recreational and cultural values.
The council is due to give its decision on July 27.
