Australia’s richest woman, Gina Rinehart called the National Gallery of Australia to remove her portrait from Vincent Namatjira’s exhibition.
The portrait, which has been described as unflattering, is a part of Mr Namatjira’s 21 portrait collection called Australians in Colour.
The collection also includes portraits of Koiki Mabo, Adam Goodes, Queen Elizabeth II and Captain Cook.
The artworks were acquired by the gallery in 2022 during its 40th anniversary celebrations.
The gallery has rejected the idea of removing the portrait and in a statement cited by AAP it says it “welcomed public dialogue on its collection and displays”.
