The head of the Northern Territory’s Aboriginal legal service has welcomed Chief Minister Michael Gunner’s decision to appoint an Indigenous person as Attorney-General.

Mr Gunner yesterday announced his new cabinet following the August 22 election.

Aranda/Gurindji man and member for Namatjira, Chansey Paech has been appointed Minister for Local Government, Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps, Minister for Indigenous Essential Services, Minister for Central Australia Economic Reconstruction and Minister for Arts and Culture.

Nunggubuyu/Wanindilyakwa woman and member for Arnhem, Selena Uibo will be the Territory’s new Attorney-General and Minister for Justice.

She will also be Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Minister for Treaty and Local Decision Making and Minister for Parks and Rangers.

CEO of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency, Prascilla Atkins has welcomed Ms Uibo’s appointment as attorney-general saying its fantastic for our people.

Chief Minister Gunner has also appointed Karama MLA Ngaree Ah Kit as NT Speaker.

Ngaree is the daughter of the late Jack Ah Kit who was the first Aboriginal cabinet minister in the Northern Territory.
