A Noongar woman has died in custody in West Australia after having a heart attack on Saturday night.

The 44 year old woman was on remand at Bandyup women’s prison in Perth.

WA corrective services commissioner James McMahon said the woman was taken in an ambulance to Royal Perth hospital and later died.

In a statement the Death in Custody Watch Committee said it was deeply saddened by her death and would be providing support to her family.

It is the first female Indigenous death in custody since 22-year old Yamatji woman Ms Dhu died in the police lockup in Port Hedland after being arrested over unpaid fines.
