A review has recommended the New South Wales government keep the country’s biggest coal fired power plant open past 2025.
Origin Energy announced in February last year it would close the Eraring Power Station near Newcastle in August 2025 because of the high cost of keeping it operating.
A review into the state’s energy transition suggests new energy projects would not be complete before Eraring closes, leading to high energy prices and supply issues.
The Minns Government announced on Tuesday that it would engage with Origin on keeping the station open temporarily.
The report’s author, Cameron O’Reilly told the ABC the current infrastructure is holding back the transition to other energy sources.
