First Nation’s ranger programs have missed out on securing funding in the 2016 Federal Budget, despite a vigorous campaigning effort.

The Country Needs People campaign has been calling on the Federal Government to double funding for Indigenous rangers and Protected Area’s by 2020.

It also calls for a commitment to longer term funding and support for a national target of 5000 Indigenous land and sea management jobs by 2030.

The Working on Country program has funded the employment of 770 rangers across 108 groups since 2007.

Conservation Partnerships Manager Patrick O’Leary, of Pew Charitable Trusts, one of the organisations backing the alliance, says the budget was very disappointing.
