The Australian Conservation Foundation says they will be working with traditional owners and environment groups to oppose a uranium mine which was approved by the Environmental Protection Authority on Monday.

The West Australian EPA recommended the Barnett government approve construction of an open-pit mine and uranium processing plant at Mulga Rock, about 240k west of Kalgoorlie.

The project would require the clearing more than 3700 hectares of native vegetation and at least one Aboriginal heritage site is expected to be affected by land clearing and excavation.

The area was the subject of a native title claim by the Wongatha people but was rejected in 2007.

The ACF’s National Nuclear Campaigner, Dave Sweeney, says people have a right to be wary about rehabilitation promises made by mining companies.
