A crowdfunding campaign in West Australia’s Kimberley region has successfully raised enough funds to create a video series celebrating and teaching the regions endangered language and culture.

The Mirima Dawang Woorlab-Gerring Language and Culture Centre, in Kununurra, has been running the campaign to develop a series of short films in an effort to revive the Miriwoong language.

Miriwoong is the Indigenous language of the lands around Kununnura and is classified as critically endangered, with only a handful of fluent speakers remaining.

Marketing and communications coordinator for the centre, Matthew Keast, says the series will allow people to learn the language for free.
