Amnesty International say the country’s Attorneys-General have missed an opportunity to make a very important change while both major parties were in the same room discussing the age of criminal responsibility.

Yesterday the Council of Attorneys-General discussed the prospect of raising the age of criminal responsibility, however they decided not to, saying they want to see what alternatives to jailing children would look like.

Amnesty’s Indigenous rights lead, Rodney Dillon says he is disappointed they didn’t arrive at the decision to raise the age but they can’t have any further excuses if more diversionary programs are established.

He says there are programs out there but the Government need to fund more.
