The Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Australia attempted to block the Governments proposed amendments to Native Title on the grounds that the Turnbull Government hasn’t permitted any consultation with First Nations people.
The Government yesterday announced a bill to amend legislation to allow Indigenous Land Use Agreements to be registered without unanimous support from all Native Title claimants.
The move is in response to a Federal Court decision which ruled that ILUA’s have to be accepted by all claimants; prompting the National Native Title Tribunal to suspend all new ILUAS’s across the country.
Labor Member for Watson Tony Burke moved a motion to allow adequate consultation before the bill is to be debated.
The Government then successfully moved a motion against Mr Bourke effectively denying any consultation with First Nations people on changes to Native Title.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion has been contacted for comment; however he is yet to respond.
