Queensland MP Bob Katter introduced legislation in Parliament on Tuesday seeking to restrict the sale of fake, foreign imports of Indigenous art in Australia.

The independent federal member says he introduced the legislation because the overseas originated goods are taking money away from Far Northern Indigenous artists.

It has been reported that up to 80 per cent of tourist shops and markets are selling ‘Aboriginal-style’ souvenirs which are often made in Indonesia.

Under current laws it is not illegal for the imports to be sold as long as they do not claim to be authentic and have a label stating where they are made.

Mr Katter says he is optimistic the legislation will pass.
