Two West Australian Indigenous MPs have called for the sacking of polices and nurses involved in the death in custody of Aboriginal woman Miss Dhu.
Liberal MP Ken Wyatt and state Labor MP Ben Wyatt have both called for action to taken against the police and nurses following the release of graphic CCTV footage of the 22-year old before her death in August 2014.
Mr Wyatt says the police have ‘got off with lights taps on the wrist’ despite the fact that two departments ‘failed in their duty.’
State opposition Aboriginal affairs spokesman Ben Wyatt backed his counterpart’s statement, and both have said they would write to WA Premier Colin Barnett asking him to “establish standards by which people must abide’ in the state’s lockups.
Mr Barnett has described the footage as ‘very confronting’ but has not condemned the authorities involved; instead saying they were in a ‘difficult situation’ and were facing ‘a lot of aggression’ at the time.
The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples has also expresses concern at a lack of disciplinary action.
Co-chair Rod Little says the officers ‘should be suspended until they are held to account and a proper inquiry is undertaken.’
Mr Little also says any investigation should be independent.
