Concerns have risen in the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory following news that water in the local swimming pool contains toxic chemicals exceeding recommended levels.

Water testing at the public pool found higher than recommended levels of PFAS chemicals prompting the local council to close the facility until further notice.

In the past the chemical has been present in firefighting foam and is being phased out around the world due to health and environmental risks.

One resident says she’s concerned for the children.
