The National Congress for Australia’s First People’s has condemned what it says are “grossly insensitive” comments comparing children of same-sex parents to the Stolen Generation.
In a statement, the Congress said the “insidious comparison is a gross insult” to Indigenous peoples who endured a policy of assimilation and eugenics.
The comparison has been in use for a number of years and has been attributed to the Australian Christian Lobby.
The lobby’s managing director Lyle Shelton last week stood by the comments after Labor’s Senate leader Penny Wong sharply criticised the same-sex marriage postal vote as “exposing” children to “that kind of hatred.”
National Congress says children of same-sex parents who are cared and loved for are “in no way subjected to the cultural genocide, abuse and loss that the Stolen Generation faced.”
