A Central Queensland MP has joined calls to remove place names with racist connotations.

This week it was revealed that ten locations in Northern Queensland were set be renamed by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines most of which contained the N-word.

Queensland Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga has called for two mountains in her Central Queensland electorate to be renamed due to their racist connotations.

One of them – Mount Jim Crow, is supposedly named after racist segregation laws in the United States that prevented African Americans from among other things sitting at the same lunch counter or swimming in the same pools as White Americans.

Ms Lauga says she’s more than happy to work with local Darumbal elders to rename the sites.
