A Co-chair of the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples has expressed concern of what a “pub test” means for racial discrimination, saying once upon a time black people weren’t allowed in the pub.
Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull has been under pressure from some within his own party to repeal the Racial Discrimination Act prompting a parliamentary review into the issue.
Those reviewing couldn’t come to a consensus on whether to change the act, while the majority of recommendations were aimed at bettering the complaint process itself.
Liberal frontbencher Concetta Fierravanti-Wells has since suggested complaints undergo a pub test in order to determine if the behaviours in question is offensive to ordinary Australians.
