The Northern Territory Chief Minister says a royal commission on the Territory’s juvenile justice system will likely begin in September with a final report due for early 2017.
The comments come following the airing of a 4 Corners report last night which revealed disturbing footage of youth being assaulted, stripped naked and teargassed among other acts of mistreatment towards the detainees which prompted the Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull this morning to announce a royal commission into the matter.
Chief Minister Adam Giles says he has been speaking with Federal Attorney-General George Brandis about undertaking the royal commission.
Mr Giles says he wants the royal commission to also investigate the child protection system which he says contributes to youth incarceration.
