In NSW, a parliamentary inquiry into reparations for the state’s stolen generation has delivered a report recommending the establishment of a compensation scheme.
Among 35 recommendations, the report also called for the creation of a Stolen Generations Advisory Committee, scholarships and priority access to social housing and the funding of collective healing initiatives.
An organisation aimed at helping former inmates of the Kinchela Boys Home is urging the NSW government to act immediately on the recommendations, following the recent passing away of two Stolen Generations members.
Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation CEO Tiffany McComsey said having a healing centre would be ‘invaluable’ for Stolen Generations members and their families.
“With the majority of the survivors now in the later stages of their lives the NSW government must see the urgency and act on the recommendations in this report while survivors of the Stolen Generations are alive and can work in partnership with Minister Williams and this Government,” said Dr McComsey.
The NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Leslie Williams, said she would “absolutely commit myself to working in partnership with you to make sure we deliver on this report.”
