The New South Wales government has announced new funding subsidies for Indigenous funeral travel.

The initiative is designed to help in situations where transport for funeral goers cannot be afforded.

The state government will be offer, to eligible people, the total cost of public transport or half the cost of private transport carrying eight or more people.

It’s not uncommon for our mob to have to travel great distances for funerals and Ngiyaampaa elder Aunty Beryl Carmichael, says it costs a lot of money travelling back and forward around the regions.

Dr Carmichael also says it shouldn’t be thrown around “willy nilly” and should depend on Centrelink and other welfare support payments.
