Traditional Owners of North Stradbroke Island off Queensland’s south east coast have opened their first keeping place for cultural artefacts.

The keeping place, which is situated in the old Dunwich high school, will hold shells, tools and other relics dated over a century or older.

Items in the keeping place will house just some of the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee artefacts with many to remain in their natural place.

The Cultural Coordinator with the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation, Michael Costello says they try to leave everything on site.

He also says the stuff they do recover is critical to telling their story and connection to country, and hopes the display will engage locals and visitors while protecting cultural heritage.

The oldest dated site on the island has proven to be about 20,600 years old.
