Qld sushi chain underpays 417 visa holders
A popular Queensland sushi chain has underpaid overseas workers by more than $123,000 including one individual who was short-changed more than $25,000.
Some of the nine Japanese and Korean nationals were employed on 417 working holiday visas and worked across three Sushi Go Round outlets in southeast Queensland between April 2014 and August 2015.
A Fair Work Ombudsman investigation has found the group were underpaid a total of $123,431.
11yo boy missing for two days in Brisbane
A search is continuing in Brisbane for an 11-year-old Aboriginal boy who’s been missing for two days.
Police say they have concerns for the schoolboy’s safety after he was last seen at 6pm on Tuesday in the Redland Bay area.
He’s described as being Aboriginal in appearance, around 150cm tall, slim build with crew cut brown hair and was last seen wearing a red T-shirt and blue shorts.
Pilots mistook Melbourne for Malaysia
An Australian aviation investigation report has found a flight to Malaysia from Sydney on March 10 last year flew to Melbourne instead because its pilot entered the wrong co-ordinates.
The Air Asia flight was carrying 212 passengers bound for Kuala Lumpur when the pilot manually entered the wrong co-ordinates into the flight’s onboard navigation systems and the report has found attempts to rectify the problem caused further errors in the system.
Turnbull heading to Micronesia
The Pacific Islands Forum has begun in Micronesia overnight, with climate change top of the agenda.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is due to touch down in Micronesia later this week for the leaders retreat.
The smaller island states like the Cook Islands, Kiribati (KIRRA-BUS) and Marshall Islands have met separately before the main forum to discuss how they can tap into climate change mitigation funding.
NSW ICAC’s powers to be scrutinised
The NSW corruption watchdog’s ability to hold public hearings is set to be scrutinised, just a week after it handed down the findings of its explosive investigation into banned political donations.
The state parliamentary committee charged with overseeing the ICAC will hold a two-day hearing from today examining the organisation’s powers.
This follows a controversial report from former Supreme Court judge David Levine, calling for an end to ICAC’s public proceedings to stop the undeserved trashing of people’s reputations.
Lindt inquest findings expected in 2017
The findings of the long-running inquest into the fatal Sydney Lindt Cafe siege are expected to be handed down next year.
While wrapping up the inquest’s last public hearing on Wednesday, Coroner Michael Barnes declared it was not his role to lay blame over the tragedy.
The question of whether Australia’s intelligence agency ASIO could have done more to stop the gunman before the fatal siege in December 2014 will likely go unanswered.
Boy dies after fall at Victorian school
A five-year-old boy has died after falling on stairs at a Victorian primary school.
The boy was critically injured in the fall at Wodonga South Primary about 4.30pm yesterday and was taken to Albury Base Hospital, in NSW, but died shortly afterwards.
