First Nation’s women are being encouraged to have free and potentially life-saving breast screens, as statistics show participation in screening among Indigenous women is still considerably lower than non-Indigenous women.

Participation in NSW has grown from 37 per cent in April last year to 41 per cent, and BreastScreen NSW is hoping to continue the upwards trend.

Kamilaroi woman Robin Payne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 after a routine screening.

Thanks to early detection she is now fully recovered and is a strong advocate for breast cancer screening in the Indigenous community.

Ms Payne has since started a group in Dubbo offering moral support to members of the community living with a cancer diagnosis.

She is encouraging women to go and get a screening.
