19 year old First Nations cricketer Ashleigh Gardner is on the verge of becoming just the second indigenous woman to play cricket for Australia.
If selected to make her debut for Australia against New Zealand at the MCG, Gardner will be following in the footsteps of Faith Thomas, an Adnyamathanha woman who became the first indigenous woman to play any sport for Australia when she played a Test match against England in 1958.
Gardner (pictured) is in Alice Springs for the National Indigenous Cricket Championships before joining the Australian squad and she says she’s excited about following in Thomas’ footsteps, if and when she makes her Australian debut.
