The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples is calling on the Queensland Government and Attorney General to drop an appeal against a racial discrimination case which found in favour of the Palm Island Indigenous community.
Federal Court Justice Debbie Mortimer last month found in favour of Palm Island man Lex Wotton and ruled that police officers had “operated with a sense of impunity” and contravened the Racial Discrimination act in their treatment of Aboriginal people in 2004.
National Congress says the Queensland Police Service and Government should be offering a ‘sincere public apology’ instead of appealing the landmark ruling.
Co-chair Rod Little says an apology would be a ‘gesture of good will and a step toward remediating relations.’
