Federal MP Bob Katter has reintroduced a bill to Parliament which would make it illegal to sell fake, imported “Aboriginal style” art.

The move comes in response to calls from Indigenous art organisations – including the Indigenous Art Code – who say the market is flooded with fake Aboriginal arts and crafts.

The Art Code has estimated that up to 85 per cent of what is sold in souvenir shops as Indigenous art is fake and imported.

Katter introduced the bill earlier in the year but it has since expired.

Gabrielle Sullivan from Indigenous Art Code says the reintroduction of the bill and a newly announced inquiry shows that there still is interest in the issue.
